Ready to book a vacation rental of your own?

Whether its an adventure in Southern Utah's red rocks, or relaxing at the beach in Mexico, we've got you covered.

St. George and Moab are Southern Utah's two biggest vacation rental markets — but they're separated by 4.5 hours of highway and serve very different types of trips. Both offer stunning red rock scenery and world-class outdoor recreation, but the vibe, amenities, scale, and park access are distinct enough that choosing the wrong one can shape your entire vacation.

The Short Answer

Choose St. George if you want a full-service city with resort amenities, family-friendly infrastructure, golf, and easy access to Zion National Park and Snow Canyon State Park. Choose Moab if you want a small-town adventure base right at the doorstep of Arches National Park and Canyonlands, with a focus on mountain biking, off-roading, and backcountry exploration.

City Scale and Amenities

St. George is a real city — population around 100,000, with a growing restaurant scene, shopping, medical facilities, a regional airport (SGU), and resort-style communities with pools, lazy rivers, and golf courses. It has the infrastructure of a mid-sized Western city, which means variety: you can eat at a dozen different restaurants in a week without repeating.

Moab is a small town of about 5,300 year-round residents that swells dramatically during tourist season. The town has excellent restaurants for its size (especially along Main Street), but options are limited compared to St. George. There's no commercial airport — most visitors fly into Salt Lake City (3.5 hrs) or Grand Junction, CO (1.5 hrs).

National Park Access

This is often the deciding factor. Zion and Snow Canyon are day trips from St. George; Arches and Canyonlands are day trips from Moab. They are not interchangeable — each is a separate destination requiring its own base camp.

If your trip is built around Zion, St. George is the obvious base. If it's built around Arches or Canyonlands, Moab is the only practical option.

Outdoor Recreation (Beyond the Parks)

St. George excels at golf (12+ courses, playable year-round), reservoir sports (Sand Hollow for boating, swimming, ATV riding), and accessible hiking. The trail system around Snow Canyon and the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is extensive and well-maintained.

Moab excels at mountain biking (Slickrock Trail, Whole Enchilada, Porcupine Rim), off-road driving (Hell's Revenge, Fins and Things), and river trips (Colorado River rafting from half-day to multi-day). The adventure level in Moab skews higher and more technical.

St. George has a significantly larger and more diverse rental market, with resort-style communities that are destinations in themselves. Moab's rental market is smaller and more utilitarian — you're booking a place to sleep between adventures, not a resort experience.

St. George is more comfortable for winter visits (snowbird season is huge), while Moab can get cold enough to limit some outdoor activities from November through February.

The Verdict

St. George is the better choice if you want Zion access, resort-style amenities, golf, a family-friendly atmosphere, and the convenience of a real city. It's the higher-comfort, lower-friction option — especially for families and large groups.

Moab is the better choice if your trip is built around Arches, Canyonlands, or technical outdoor pursuits like mountain biking, off-roading, and river trips. It's smaller and more rugged, but the adventure payoff is enormous.

Can't decide? Some travelers split the trip — a few nights in each. They're connected by I-70 and US-191, and the drive between them crosses some of Utah's most dramatic scenery.
